The March Madness celebration started in 1984, but the actual NCAA Tournament between 68 college teams started in 1939. In 1997, the NCAA required that the Final Four play in domed stadiums with a minimum capacity of 40,000, though often only half the seats were used. The popularity has grown over the years, and in 2009 the capacity was raised to 70,000.
