History of the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament

The first ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament was held in March of 1954 at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, North Carolina. The North Carolina State Wolfpack beat the Wake Forest Demon Deacons by a score of 82-80 in overtime. Since then the ACC Tournament has seen some of the greatest college basketball in NCAA history. The ACC conference holds 12 National Championship titles, second only to the Pac-10 (15) which is home of John Wooden’s 11 National Championship titles. The ACC is also the beginning place of great NBA Careers like Tim Duncan, Grant Hill, and Michael Jordan. With such a rich tradition of talent and excellence, the ACC has one of the most anticipated conference tournaments every year. In 2016, the ACC Tournament featured six NCAA Sweet Sixteen teams, an NCAA record. Duke has the most ACC Tournament titles with 20 overall and North Carolina follows closely with 18. In all, the ACC Tournament champion has gone on to win the National Championship seven times. The ACC Men's Basketball Tournament truly has one of the richest histories in college basketball and deliveries some of the best performances of the season every year. The 2020 ACC Tournament will return to Greensboro, North Carolina at the Greensboro Coliseum which last hosted the ACC Tournament from '13 through '15. The tournament has been held in Greensboro a record 27 other times at the Greensboro Coliseum. Seating over 23,000 fans and opened in 1959, the arena is also home to the Greensboro Swarm of the National Basketball Association's G League. It also played host to the Final Four in 1974 and held the East NCAA Regional Finals in 1976, 1979, and 1998.
