Ground broke on the Kentucky Speedway on July 10, 1998 and was the largest excavation project in Kentucky History. The track held its first races in June of 2000 and Greg Biffle and Billy Bigley Jr. became the first drivers to capture wins in Kentucky. In 2002 at Kentucky Speedway, Sarah Fisher became the first woman to earn the pole award for a major North American open wheel event and set a track qualifying record. In July of 2011, the Kentucky Speedway hosted its first NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series event, the Quaker State 400. Brad Keselowski has been the most successful driver at the speedway, winning three times so far. In '16 the track was resurfaced and repaved to provide better drainage and SAFER wall barriers were added in order to protect drivers. The famous Run for the Roses, the Kentucky Derby, is hosted two months prior to the NASCAR race date in nearby Louisville.
