Phoenix International Raceway was built in 1964 with the goal of being the home of open wheel racing in the western United States. Original raceway construction included a 1 mile tri oval speedway, a drag strip, and a 2 mile interior/exterior road course. After a redesign and reconstruction in 1991, the road course became completely contained within the interior and shortened to a racing distance of 1.51 miles. This allowed for all racing to be better viewed by the 67,000 fans the grandstands at Phoenix International Raceway can hold. Remodeling took place again in 2011 and saw the road course closed for good, pits changed from asphalt to concrete, and a shortening of the turn radius in the dogleg between turns 2 and 3 to allow for multi groove racing and driver safety. The raceway currently host two NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series races as well as races in the Verizon IndyCar Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series. Kevin Harvick is the most successful driver at Phoenix International Raceway with 8 career victories, Jimmie Johnson has also seen success there having 14 top 5 finishes.
