At a distance of only ¾ of a mile, Richmond International Raceway is known as “America’s Premier Short Track”. Originally opened in 1946 as Strawberry Hill Raceway at Virginia State Fairgrounds, the D-shaped track has hosted NASCAR races every year since 1953. On March 10th, 1964 the first under the lights race was run at Richmond International Raceway and today Richmond is the only raceway to hold all of its races at night. Richmond International Raceway has been the launching pad for several NASCAR careers, drivers winning their first race in Richmond include Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne. However, it’s not all first in Richmond as the raceway was also the site of the last International Race of Champions in 2005. Richard Petty holds the most victories at the track with 13, Petty also holds Richmond records for top 5 and top 10 finishes in addition to starts, poles, laps completed, and laps led. Currently Richmond International Speedway hosts events for NASCAR’s Monster Energy Cup Series, Xfinity Series, and K&N Pro Series East.
